Biography
Todd Bentley (born January 10, 1976) is a Canadian evangelist and self-proclaimed faith healer who rose to international fame during the 2008 Lakeland Revival in Florida, which drew over 400,000 attendees and was broadcast nightly on GOD TV.
Known for his tattoos, piercings, and signature 'BAM!' battle cry, Bentley became infamous for violently kicking, punching, and choking people during 'healing' services, claiming God commanded him to do so. He claims regular encounters with angels — including a female angel named 'Emma' — visits to heaven, and meetings with the Apostle Paul. ABC Nightline could not independently verify a single healing claim.
The revival collapsed in August 2008 when Bentley's affair with his family's nanny was exposed. He divorced his wife Shonnah and married the other woman within months. In 2019, former protege Stephen Powell accused him of sexual misconduct with both male and female interns.
A 2020 panel of charismatic pastors — his own theological allies — unanimously declared him unfit for ministry, citing 'a steady pattern of ungodly and immoral behavior' spanning 15 years. He was also banned from entering the United Kingdom. Despite formal disqualification, Bentley continues to minister, most recently platformed by Rick Joyner at MorningStar Ministries in late 2024.
Biblical Assessment
Every preacher is tested against our 5-point biblical framework. Here's how Todd Bentley measures up:
Title & Authority
Self-appointed evangelist with no formal biblical ordination. His 2008 'apostolic commissioning' by NAR leaders (C. Peter Wagner, Bill Johnson, John Arnott, Che Ahn) collapsed within two months when his affair was exposed. Rick Joyner 'restored' him after barely a year. In 2020, an independent panel of charismatic pastors unanimously declared him unqualified for ministry. He simply ignored the ruling and continued preaching under a new ministry name.
Scripture:
1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9, Acts 14:23
Gospel Message
Sermons focus almost exclusively on supernatural experiences, angelic encounters, healing spectacle, and personal testimony. Multiple observers noted he seldom brought a Bible to the pulpit. He reportedly told followers that God instructed him not to preach about Jesus but to stress the supernatural. The cross, repentance, and salvation are peripheral at best. His stated position: 'If we don't have signs then all we have is a bunch of theology.'
Scripture:
1 Corinthians 15:1-4, 1 Corinthians 2:1-2, Galatians 1:6-9
Fruit & Lifestyle
A documented pattern of moral failure spanning at least 15 years (2004-2019). Had an affair with his family's nanny during the Lakeland Revival, divorced his wife, and remarried within months. In 2019, accused of sexual misconduct with male and female interns, including offering money for sexual acts. A 2020 investigative panel found 'credible accusations of adultery, sexting, vulgar language, and substance abuse.' The panel concluded: 'We see no signs of true, lasting repentance.' He physically assaulted people during services — kicking, punching, choking, and knocking out teeth — claiming divine instruction. Banned from entering the UK.
Scripture:
Matthew 7:16-20, 1 Timothy 3:2-7, Galatians 5:19-21
Revelation vs. Scripture
Extra-biblical revelation dominates his entire ministry. Claims encounters with a female angel named 'Emma' who released 'financial and prophetic anointing.' Claims visits to heaven where he met the Apostle Paul and saw 'over 100 healing pools.' Claims angels operated on him on a heavenly operating table. Claims a 'financial angel' appeared in his hotel room. Connected to 'grave sucking' practices — visiting graves to absorb dead preachers' anointings. Scripture, when used, serves only to validate experiential claims rather than as primary authority.
Scripture:
2 Timothy 3:16-17, Colossians 2:18, Deuteronomy 18:10-12
Finances & Transparency
Aggressive fundraising during Lakeland Revival services, including ATM machines set up alongside food booths. Sold 'anointed handkerchiefs' and took money to pray over people. Tiered donation structure: 'Harvester Partner' ($30/month), 'Kingdom Builder' ($80/month), 'Global Fire Partner' ($500/month). When journalists requested financial disclosure, his spokesperson said he was 'too busy keeping up with what God is doing.' Promised to open books for auditors — it never happened. Told audiences: 'Generosity and the anointing go hand in hand.'
Scripture:
2 Corinthians 2:17, Acts 8:18-23, Matthew 10:8
Key Quotes
These statements from Todd Bentley reveal doctrinal error.
"I told God, 'Why is the power not moving?' He said, 'Because you haven't kicked that woman in the face.' The gift of faith came on me. He said, 'Kick her in the face — with your biker boot!' I inched closer and BAM! Just as my boot made contact with her nose, she fell under the power of God."— Todd Bentley
"I said, 'God, I want revival,' and He said these words to me: 'Leg-drop the pastor!'"— Todd Bentley
"In walks Emma. The Lord said, 'Here's Emma.' She floated a couple of inches off the floor, emitting brilliant light and colors. She carried bags and began pulling gold out of them, putting gold dust on people. I believe Emma released a financial and prophetic anointing."— Todd Bentley
"I told the Lord, 'Why can't I just move in healing and forget talking about all that other stuff?' He said, 'Because, Todd, you gotta get the people to believe in the angel.' I said, 'God, why do I want people to believe in the angel, isn't it about getting the people to believe in Jesus?' He said, 'The people already believe in Jesus, but the church doesn't believe in the supernatural.'"— Todd Bentley
"The majority of these accusations are absolutely not true. Not all, but the majority. However, there are some that are true, some that even are partial truths."— Todd Bentley
"Generosity and the anointing go hand in hand."— Todd Bentley
