RC Sproul
Reformed theologian who taught the holiness of God to millions (1939-2017)
Biography
Robert Charles Sproul (1939-2017) was an American Reformed theologian, pastor, author of over 100 books, and founder of Ligonier Ministries — the largest Reformed educational ministry in the world, reaching subscribers in 105 countries. Converted during his freshman year at Westminster College, he was mentored by Dr.
John Gerstner at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and became one of the most influential proponents of Reformed theology in the 20th century. He co-authored the 1978 Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy, served as general editor of the Reformation Study Bible, and hosted the daily radio program Renewing Your Mind for over two decades.
In 1997 he founded Saint Andrew's Chapel in Sanford, Florida, where he served as minister of preaching and teaching until his death. He also founded Reformation Bible College in 2010. Sproul was described as having 'a John Calvin mind with a Billy Graham reach' — making serious theology accessible to laypeople.
His signature theme was the holiness of God: 'The failure of modern evangelicalism is the failure to understand the holiness of God.' He publicly opposed Evangelicals and Catholics Together (ECT) in the 1990s, defending justification by faith alone to the point of severing friendships.
He refused to sign the Manhattan Declaration for similar reasons. His life embodied the Reformed conviction that theology exists to serve the church and glorify God.
Biblical Assessment
Every preacher is tested against our 5-point biblical framework. Here's how RC Sproul measures up:
Title & Authority
Ordained Presbyterian minister (PCA). Seminary-trained at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary under Dr. John Gerstner. Professor at Reformed Theological Seminary and Knox Theological Seminary. Served under biblical eldership his entire career. Founded Reformation Bible College. Left the UPCUSA over women's ordination — choosing faithfulness over institutional comfort.
Scripture:
1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9, 2 Timothy 2:2
Gospel Message
Taught justification by faith alone as essential to the gospel — not merely important, but essential. Defended the five solas of the Reformation. Publicly opposed ECT when evangelical leaders compromised on sola fide. Wrote 'Faith Alone' in direct response. Taught total depravity, the sovereignty of God in salvation, and the doctrines of grace with clarity and conviction.
Scripture:
Romans 3:21-28, Ephesians 2:1-10, 1 Corinthians 15:1-4, Galatians 2:16
Fruit & Lifestyle
Lived modestly despite access to significant wealth. Married to Vesta for 57 years until his death. No moral failures or scandals. Devoted his life entirely to teaching, writing, and pastoral ministry. Known for personal humility, love for God's Word, and willingness to lose friendships over doctrinal fidelity. Preached his final sermon on 'So Great Salvation' (Hebrews 2:1-4) three weeks before his death.
Scripture:
1 Timothy 3:2-3, Philippians 2:3-8, 1 Peter 5:2-3
Revelation vs. Scripture
Scripture alone was his authority — sola Scriptura was not just a doctrine he taught but a principle he lived. Co-architect of the 1978 Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy. General editor of the Reformation Study Bible. Never claimed extra-biblical revelation. His entire teaching ministry was expositional and rooted in the text of Scripture.
Scripture:
2 Timothy 3:16-17, Psalm 19:7-11, 2 Peter 1:19-21
Finances & Transparency
Ligonier Ministries maintains financial transparency and focuses on distributing theological resources — many freely available. Sproul lived simply throughout his life. Founded a ministry focused on education and discipleship, not personal enrichment. Took a modest salary. No financial scandals in over 50 years of ministry.
Scripture:
Acts 20:33-35, 2 Corinthians 12:14, 1 Timothy 6:6-8
