Philip Anthony Mitchell: 'Preaching Like a Man Running Out of Time'

Why does this teaching matter?

The urgency Mitchell describes is the ordinary posture of the New Testament, not an excess. Jesus tied His own work to a closing window; Paul told the church to redeem the time. The name of Mitchell's congregation is taken from the Great Commission text itself, and the commission is not merely to win converts but to make disciples who are taught to obey — a distinction that separates genuine multiplication from crowd-gathering. Urgency is biblical; the test of it is whether it produces taught, obedient disciples or simply larger numbers.

What did Philip Anthony Mitchell teach?

"We need to be about the business of the spread of the gospel… winning souls, multiplying disciples… I'm preaching like a man running out of time."

What does Scripture confirm?

Matthew 28:19-20

"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen."

NKJV

The commission is to make disciples, not merely decisions, and disciples are made by teaching obedience to everything Christ commanded. This is the standard any fast-growing ministry — including Mitchell's — must ultimately be measured by.

John 9:4

"I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work."

NKJV

Christ Himself worked against a closing window. Urgency in gospel labour is not emotional excess; it is imitation of the Lord who set the pattern.

Ephesians 5:16

"redeeming the time, because the days are evil."

NKJV

Paul commands believers to buy back the time precisely because the days are evil. A preacher who behaves as though time is short is obeying this text, not overreacting to the age.
