Tony Alamo

Cult leader convicted of taking child 'brides' — sentenced to 175 years in prison

Biography

Tony Alamo (born Bernie Lazar Hoffman, 1934-2017) was the leader of Tony Alamo Christian Ministries, headquartered in Dyer, Arkansas. He became a prominent street preacher in 1960s Los Angeles, attracting young people, hippies, and countercultural followers. He built a multi-million dollar ministry with operations in multiple states. The Southern Poverty Law Center classified his ministry as a hate group. Alamo took underage girls as 'wives,' some as young as eight years old. An FBI investigation found he traveled with young children between 1994 and 2005, trafficking them across state lines for sexual purposes. On September 20, 2008, state and federal officials raided Alamo's compound in Arkansas as part of a two-year investigation. He was arrested on September 25, 2008, in Flagstaff, Arizona. On July 24, 2009, Alamo was found guilty on ten counts of taking underage girls across state lines for sex. He was sentenced to 175 years in federal prison and fined $250,000. His five victims were awarded $500,000 each in restitution. A separate civil suit resulted in a $525 million judgment — the largest in Arkansas history. His conviction was upheld on appeal in 2010. Alamo died in prison on May 2, 2017.
