False Teacher

Rod Parsley

Prosperity preacher who openly declared 'I want your money — I deserve it'

Biography

Rodney Lee Parsley (born 1957) is an American televangelist who founded World Harvest Church in Canal Winchester, Ohio — a 5,200-seat complex on 57 acres with approximately 12,000 members. He dropped out of Circleville Bible College during his second year and started his ministry as a 17-person Bible study in his parents' backyard in 1977. He runs the Breakthrough television ministry (1,400 stations), Bridge of Hope missions, Valor Christian College, and the Center for Moral Clarity political organization. He claims a manufactured 'spiritual lineage' from Smith Wigglesworth through Lester Sumrall, who allegedly passed his 'sword of anointing' to Parsley. He openly declared from the pulpit: 'I just love to talk about your money. I want your money. I deserve it. This church deserves it.' He teaches that living paycheck to paycheck 'denies the power of the gospel' and sells 'miracle cloths' tied to donations — claiming a 'tangible, transferable anointing.' He lives on a gated 21-acre compound, flies a private jet, and received an 'F' rating from MinistryWatch for financial transparency. His wife Joni was convicted of voter fraud in 2016. A 2-year-old was beaten at his church daycare, resulting in a $3.1 million settlement — which Parsley then reframed as a 'demonically inspired financial attack' to solicit donations. In 2008, John McCain was forced to reject Parsley's endorsement after recordings surfaced of Parsley calling for the destruction of Islam.

Biblical Assessment

Every preacher is tested against our 5-point biblical framework. Here's how Rod Parsley measures up:

1

Title & Authority

VERDICT: FAIL

Dropped out of Bible college. Claims authority through a manufactured 'spiritual lineage' (Wigglesworth → Carter → Sumrall → Parsley) with no biblical basis. Self-styled titles with no accountability to external church authority. Journalist Dan Williamson observed: 'It's hard to spot any religious symbols, such as representations of Jesus, but there are lots of photos of Parsley' at World Harvest Church. The ministry is a personality cult.

Scripture:

1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9, 2 Corinthians 11:13-15, Jeremiah 23:21

2

Gospel Message

VERDICT: FAIL

The gospel is reduced to financial prosperity and physical health. Teaches that poverty 'denies the power of the gospel' and that living paycheck to paycheck is spiritual failure. The cross, repentance, holiness, and sanctification are replaced by seed-faith giving and material expectations. The central message is not Christ crucified — it is 'sow money for whatever you want.'

Scripture:

Galatians 1:6-9, 1 Timothy 6:5-10, 2 Peter 2:1-3, 1 Corinthians 1:18

3

Fruit & Lifestyle

VERDICT: FAIL

Gated 21-acre compound, private jet, two $60,000 vehicles, parents' $940,000 home on the compound plus $450,000 San Diego vacation home. A 2-year-old was beaten at his church daycare ($3.1M settlement). His church school had a child sexual abuse case that went unreported despite warnings. Wife convicted of voter fraud. Father convicted of disorderly conduct for knocking a house painter unconscious. Sexual harassment lawsuit by a former employee.

Scripture:

Matthew 7:16-20, 1 Timothy 3:2-4, 1 Peter 5:2-3, James 5:1-6

4

Revelation vs. Scripture

VERDICT: FAIL

Claims a 'tangible, transferable anointing' passed through a human lineage. Assigns spiritual power to physical objects (prayer cloths, mantles) in exchange for money. Uses numerology-based urgency (12/12/12 as 'God's number of COMPLETION'). Treats his own declarations ('Sow $2,000 says the man of God') as equivalent to divine commands. Scripture is subordinated to personal revelation and theatrical experience.

Scripture:

2 Timothy 3:16-17, Deuteronomy 18:20-22, Acts 17:11, Revelation 22:18-19

5

Finances & Transparency

VERDICT: FAIL

MinistryWatch 'F' rating — ministry has 'chosen not to be open and transparent.' Salary and compensation completely undisclosed. Openly declared: 'I want your money. I deserve it.' Disguised a $3.1M legal settlement as a 'demonically inspired financial attack' to solicit emergency donations. Sells 'miracle cloths' tied to financial gifts. Accused of fraudulently accepting $7,000 for a project never built.

Scripture:

Acts 8:18-23, 2 Corinthians 11:7, 1 Timothy 6:5-10, 2 Peter 2:3
