Jack Schaap

IFB megachurch pastor imprisoned for sexually abusing a 16-year-old he was counseling

Biography

Jack Schaap was the senior pastor of First Baptist Church of Hammond, Indiana — one of the most influential churches in the Independent Fundamental Baptist (IFB) movement, with approximately 15,000 members. He was the son-in-law of Jack Hyles, the legendary IFB figure who founded the church and Hyles-Anderson College. Schaap took over as senior pastor after Hyles died in 2001. Schaap was entrusted with counseling a struggling teenage girl who had attended the church since she was five years old. Instead of providing pastoral care, he groomed the 16-year-old and had sex with her on multiple occasions over months. He transported her across state lines — to Illinois and Michigan — for sexual encounters. When church staff discovered the relationship, they reported it to police. Schaap was fired on July 31, 2012. In September 2012, he was charged under the federal Mann Act (transporting a minor across state lines for sexual purposes) and pleaded guilty. The judge noted that Schaap tried to 'cover up and eradicate evidence,' downloaded software specifically designed to delete photographs of his encounters with the victim, blamed the teen's 'aggressiveness,' and claimed he did not know he was breaking the law. He was sentenced to 12 years in federal prison. Schaap was released from prison in May 2022, approximately nine months early. He reportedly has not registered as a sex offender as required by the terms of his release.

Biblical Assessment

Every preacher is tested against our 5-point biblical framework. Here's how Jack Schaap measures up:

1

Title & Authority

VERDICT: FAIL

Inherited his position through family connections (son-in-law of Jack Hyles) rather than clear biblical calling. Used his enormous pastoral authority to groom and sexually abuse a vulnerable teenager who was entrusted to his care for counseling.

Scripture:

1 Timothy 3:1-7, James 3:1, Ezekiel 34:2-4

2

Gospel Message

VERDICT: FAIL

Preached an authoritarian, legalistic form of Christianity common in the IFB movement. The church's culture of unquestioning obedience to the pastor enabled his abuse. A gospel that produces predators is no gospel at all.

Scripture:

Matthew 7:15-20, 2 Corinthians 11:13-15, Galatians 5:19-21

3

Fruit & Lifestyle

VERDICT: FAIL

Sexually abused a 16-year-old girl who had attended his church since age five and was entrusted to him for counseling. Transported her across state lines for sex (federal crime). Attempted to destroy evidence. Blamed the teenage victim's 'aggressiveness.' Convicted under the Mann Act and sentenced to 12 years in federal prison.

Scripture:

Matthew 18:6, Proverbs 6:27-29, 2 Samuel 12:7-9

4

Revelation vs. Scripture

VERDICT: FAIL

Practiced authoritarian pastoral leadership typical of the IFB movement, where the pastor's word is treated as near-infallible. This unchecked authority created the conditions for his predatory behavior. Scripture was used to demand obedience, not to foster accountability.

Scripture:

1 Peter 5:2-3, 3 John 1:9-10, Matthew 20:25-28

5

Finances & Transparency

VERDICT: FAIL

First Baptist Hammond operated with limited financial transparency typical of IFB megachurches. The church's vast resources and influence were used to maintain a cult of personality around its pastors rather than serve the flock.

Scripture:

1 Timothy 6:10, 1 Peter 5:2, 2 Corinthians 8:21
