False Teacher

Bob Coy

Calvary Chapel megachurch founder accused of molesting a child from age 4

Biography

Bob Coy founded Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale in 1985 and grew it into the largest Calvary Chapel in the country with approximately 25,000 members. He was known as a 'superstar preacher' whose conversion story — from working at a record company and in Las Vegas strip clubs to becoming a pastor — gave his ministry extra appeal. In April 2014, Coy resigned as senior pastor after admitting to adultery and pornography addiction. In August 2015, a mother contacted Coral Springs police to report that Coy had sexually abused her daughter. The girl, by then a teenager, told police that Coy had started molesting her when she was four years old, fondling her genitals and forcing her to perform oral sex. She said the abuse continued into her teen years. Coral Springs police sat on the accusations for months. Then the girl walked into police headquarters, saying she 'had an experience with God and has found forgiveness.' She asked for the files to be destroyed. Police could not destroy files but closed the case the same day. Broward State Attorney Mike Satz said he was never told about the investigation. Coy was never charged. At least eight pastors, staffers, and volunteers in Calvary Chapel's broader network have been charged with abusing children since 2010. Coy's divorce records were sealed by a judge to 'protect Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale from scrutiny.'

Biblical Assessment

Every preacher is tested against our 5-point biblical framework. Here's how Bob Coy measures up:

1

Title & Authority

VERDICT: FAIL

Built one of the largest Calvary Chapel churches in America while allegedly molesting a child from age four. His pastoral authority was used as cover for unspeakable abuse. His resignation for 'adultery' masked far worse allegations.

Scripture:

1 Timothy 3:1-7, Ezekiel 34:2-4, Jeremiah 23:1-2

2

Gospel Message

VERDICT: FAIL

Preached repentance and transformation based on his own dramatic conversion story while allegedly abusing a child for over a decade. When his victim tried to seek justice, the system failed her. His church actively sought to suppress scrutiny.

Scripture:

Romans 2:21-24, Titus 1:16, Matthew 23:27-28

3

Fruit & Lifestyle

VERDICT: FAIL

Accused of molesting a girl beginning when she was four years old — fondling and forcing her to perform oral sex — with the abuse continuing into her teen years. Also admitted to adultery and pornography addiction. The police investigation was mysteriously dropped after the victim said she 'found forgiveness through God.' Never criminally charged.

Scripture:

Matthew 18:6, Proverbs 6:27-29, Matthew 7:15-20

4

Revelation vs. Scripture

VERDICT: FAIL

Built his ministry on a compelling personal conversion narrative — from the sin industry to the pulpit. Yet the most damning accusation suggests the worst of his former life followed him into ministry. His teaching was a performance, not a transformation.

Scripture:

2 Timothy 3:5, 2 Peter 2:1-3, Matthew 7:21-23

5

Finances & Transparency

VERDICT: FAIL

Led a 25,000-member megachurch with enormous financial resources. His divorce records were sealed by a judge specifically to 'protect Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale from scrutiny' — indicating institutional priority of protecting the organization over protecting victims.

Scripture:

2 Corinthians 4:2, Ephesians 5:11-13, Luke 12:2-3
