Bill Gothard

IBLP leader accused of sexual harassment and abuse by over 30 women — many were minors

Biography

Bill Gothard (born 1934) founded the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP) and the Advanced Training Institute (ATI), a massive evangelical parachurch organization based in Oak Brook, Illinois. His seminars were attended by tens of thousands of conservative Christian families nationwide and he was enormously influential in homeschooling and fundamentalist evangelical circles. His organization operated training centers across the country and was closely associated with the Duggar family of '19 Kids and Counting.' Since 2012, more than 30 women have come forward with allegations of sexual harassment and abuse against Gothard. Many victims were minors when the alleged abuse occurred. One woman was targeted beginning at age 15 when she went to work at IBLP headquarters. Another alleged Gothard raped her when she was approximately 17-18. Gothard would target young women for unwanted touching and suggestive comments, and would 'counsel' prior victims of sexual assault by subjecting them to unwanted touching and telling them they shared guilt for their own assault if they did not 'cry out to God.' In January 2016, ten women filed suit in DuPage County, Illinois, alleging sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and inappropriate touching. Gothard was placed on administrative leave in 2014 and eventually stepped down from IBLP. The civil lawsuit was dismissed due to statute of limitations issues. In 2025, the Texas Supreme Court ruled that a separate lawsuit alleging IBLP constitutes a 'cult that grooms girls to be available to sexual assault' can proceed. Gothard has denied all allegations.

Biblical Assessment

Every preacher is tested against our 5-point biblical framework. Here's how Bill Gothard measures up:

1

Title & Authority

VERDICT: FAIL

Self-appointed authority figure who built a massive organization centered entirely around his personal teachings. Demanded absolute submission from followers. Created a system where his authority was unquestionable — the perfect structure for a predator.

Scripture:

3 John 1:9-10, 1 Peter 5:2-3, Matthew 20:25-28

2

Gospel Message

VERDICT: FAIL

Taught a legalistic system of 'principles' that emphasized external conformity, authority structures, and obedience over gospel grace. His theology of submission and authority was used to silence victims. He told sexual abuse victims they shared guilt if they did not 'cry out to God' — blaming victims using Scripture.

Scripture:

Galatians 1:6-9, Colossians 2:8, Galatians 5:1

3

Fruit & Lifestyle

VERDICT: FAIL

Over 30 women have accused him of sexual harassment and abuse, many of whom were minors. Targeted young women working at IBLP headquarters. Used 'counseling' sessions to subject sexual abuse victims to unwanted touching while blaming them for their own assault. One woman alleges rape.

Scripture:

Matthew 18:6, Matthew 7:15-20, James 3:1

4

Revelation vs. Scripture

VERDICT: FAIL

Created a complex system of extra-biblical 'principles' presented as God's universal laws. These principles — especially those regarding authority, submission, and 'umbrella of protection' — created a framework that silenced dissent and protected the abuser.

Scripture:

Colossians 2:20-23, Mark 7:7-9, 2 Timothy 3:5

5

Finances & Transparency

VERDICT: FAIL

IBLP operated as a massive organization generating millions in revenue from seminars, materials, and training centers. Gothard held personal control over the organization for decades. Financial accountability was minimal in a structure designed around one man's authority.

Scripture:

2 Peter 2:3, 1 Timothy 6:10, 2 Corinthians 8:21
