Acton Bowen

Youth evangelist sentenced to 1,008 years for sexual abuse of six teenage boys

Biography

Acton Bowen was a prominent youth evangelist in Alabama's Christian community through Acton Bowen Outreach Ministries. He was considered a 'hometown hero' and claimed to have served as chaplain for the 2012 Olympics, made appearances on Fox News, and promoted himself as a spiritual adviser to Hollywood stars including Justin Bieber. Bowen was arrested in April 2018 following a three-week investigation by the Hoover Police Department's special victims unit. He was charged with sexual abuse, sodomy, enticing a child for sex, and traveling to meet a child for sexual abuse involving six male teenagers between the ages of 13 and 16. The complaints spanned from 2006 to as recently as April 2018. He had been working with students from Coosa Christian School. The FBI also investigated his trips with teenage boys across state lines. On December 2, 2019, Bowen pleaded guilty to 28 counts of sexual abuse. He was given the maximum sentence for all 28 charges, to be served consecutively: 1,008 years in prison and $840,000 in fines. His appeal was denied.

Biblical Assessment

Every preacher is tested against our 5-point biblical framework. Here's how Acton Bowen measures up:

1

Title & Authority

VERDICT: FAIL

Operated as a self-promoting youth evangelist with inflated credentials (claimed to be chaplain at the 2012 Olympics, spiritual adviser to celebrities). Used this manufactured celebrity status to gain access to teenage boys.

Scripture:

2 Corinthians 11:13-15, Matthew 7:15, 1 Timothy 3:1-7

2

Gospel Message

VERDICT: FAIL

Used the gospel as a tool to gain trust and access to vulnerable young people. His entire ministry was a vehicle for predation disguised as youth evangelism.

Scripture:

2 Peter 2:1-3, Jude 1:4, Romans 2:24

3

Fruit & Lifestyle

VERDICT: FAIL

Pleaded guilty to 28 counts of sexual abuse of six teenage boys ages 13-16. The abuse spanned over 12 years (2006-2018). Charges included sodomy, enticing a child for sex, and traveling to meet a child for sexual abuse. Sentenced to 1,008 years in prison — the maximum on every single count, served consecutively.

Scripture:

Matthew 18:6, Romans 1:26-27, Galatians 5:19-21

4

Revelation vs. Scripture

VERDICT: FAIL

Presented himself as a Spirit-led evangelist with a special calling to youth ministry. Used this claim of divine mission to cultivate trust among parents, schools, and churches who then gave him unsupervised access to children.

Scripture:

Jeremiah 23:16, 2 Timothy 3:5-7, Matthew 7:21-23

5

Finances & Transparency

VERDICT: FAIL

Ran a personal ministry organization with no meaningful financial accountability. Used ministry funds and resources to facilitate access to victims. Fined $840,000 as part of his sentence.

Scripture:

1 Timothy 6:10, 2 Peter 2:3, 2 Corinthians 8:21
