Source: Describing the arrival of the Toronto Blessing at HTB via Eleanor Mumford, May 1994. Gumbel described people being 'thrown, literally, across the room' and 'lying on the floor, just howling and laughing.' He then modified the Alpha talks to incorporate this testimony.

By admitting it 'could be a combination' of psychological and divine, Gumbel concedes these experiences may not be purely from God — yet he never applied biblical testing to distinguish the two.

When a professional warned that Wimber's Spirit ministry at HTB resembled mass hypnosis, HTB's leadership laughed it off as a compliment rather than investigating the claim — a direct failure to 'test the spirits' as Scripture commands.

Despite the Toronto Blessing featuring animal sounds, uncontrollable laughter, and people writhing on the floor — phenomena so extreme the Vineyard Association disassociated the Toronto church in 1995 — Gumbel still affirms it as genuine Holy Spirit work without qualification.

Source: Nicky Gumbel, public praise of Mike Pilavachi, February 2023 — months before Pilavachi was exposed for decades of bullying, spiritual manipulation, and inappropriate physical contact with young men at Soul Survivor. Pilavachi trained for ordination at St Mellitus College, part of the HTB network. Gumbel made no public comment after the scandal broke.
