Joyce Meyer's 'Jesus Stopped Being God' Claim

Is this teaching biblical?

Joyce Meyer's claim that Jesus 'was no longer the Son of God' on the cross is a devastating heresy that strikes at the core of Christian theology. If Jesus ceased to be God, then God did not die for our sins — a mere creature did. This destroys the infinite value of the atonement and makes salvation impossible.

What did Joyce Meyer say?

"He had become sin, he was no longer the Son of God. He was sin."

What does Scripture actually teach?

Hebrews 13:8

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever."

NKJV

Christ's divine nature is unchanging. He did not cease being the Son of God on the cross — His nature is eternally constant. Meyer's teaching contradicts this fundamental truth.

Colossians 1:19-20

"For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross."

NKJV

ALL the fullness of God dwelt in Christ — even at the cross. It was precisely because He remained fully God that His sacrifice had infinite value for reconciliation.

John 1:1

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

NKJV

Christ IS God — this is His eternal nature. He did not temporarily cease being God. The Word 'was' God — the imperfect tense indicating continuous, unbroken existence.
