Joel Osteen's 'The Ball's in Your Court' Theology

Is this teaching biblical?

This statement reveals the deistic core of Osteen's theology: God set things up and now it's all up to you. This denies God's ongoing sovereignty, His active providence, and the work of the Holy Spirit. John MacArthur responded: 'He tells people to take that part of God which exists in you and create your own reality.' If the ball were truly 'in our court,' we would all be lost — because salvation is 'not of works, lest anyone should boast' (Ephesians 2:9).

What did Joel Osteen say?

"God has already done everything He's going to do. The ball's in your court."

What does Scripture actually teach?

Philippians 1:6

being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;

NKJV

God has NOT 'already done everything He's going to do.' He is actively at work in believers, and He will COMPLETE what He started. Osteen's statement strips God of His ongoing work and places the burden entirely on human effort.

Ephesians 2:8-9

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.

NKJV

Salvation is God's gift — 'not of yourselves.' Even the faith to believe is a gift from God. If the ball were in our court, no one would be saved, because spiritually dead people cannot choose life (Ephesians 2:1-5). Osteen's theology makes man the savior and God the spectator.
