Charles Spurgeon

The 'Prince of Preachers' who never preached a sermon without Christ crucified (1834-1892)

Biography

Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) was a British Reformed Baptist pastor universally known as the 'Prince of Preachers.' Converted at age 15 when a Primitive Methodist preacher pointed him to Isaiah 45:22 — 'Look unto me, and be ye saved' — he began preaching at 16 and became pastor of London's New Park Street Chapel at age 20. By 22, he was the most popular preacher in England, regularly addressing crowds of 10,000+ without amplification. In 1861 he opened the Metropolitan Tabernacle, seating 6,000 — the first modern 'megachurch.' He pastored there for 31 years, baptizing over 15,000 converts and growing the church from 232 to 5,311 members. His collected sermons fill 63 volumes — the largest set of books by a single author in Christian history — selling 25,000 copies per week and reaching an estimated 40 million readers. He founded the Pastors' College (now Spurgeon's College), the Stockwell Orphanage housing 500+ children, 17 almshouses for widows, and helped plant over 200 Baptist churches. Despite earning the equivalent of millions from sermon sales, he gave almost all of it away and took no salary from the Tabernacle. In 1887 he withdrew from the Baptist Union during the Downgrade Controversy, warning that biblical authority, substitutionary atonement, and the reality of judgment were being abandoned. The Union censured him rather than addressing the doctrinal concerns — a decision history has vindicated. He died in 1892, his health broken by the controversy. His motto: 'A sermon without Christ in it is like a loaf of bread without any flour in it.'

Biblical Assessment

Every preacher is tested against our 5-point biblical framework. Here's how Charles Spurgeon measures up:

1

Title & Authority

VERDICT: FOUNDATION-OF-FAITH

Called to pastor New Park Street Chapel at age 20 by the congregation. Served faithfully for 38 years. Trained nearly 900 pastors at the Pastors' College. His students planted over 200 Baptist churches. Never sought grandiose titles — campaigned to drop 'Reverend' in favor of simply 'Pastor.' He was sent, called, and affirmed by the church throughout his ministry.

Scripture:

1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9, 2 Timothy 2:2, 1 Peter 5:1-4

2

Gospel Message

VERDICT: INSPIRED-SCRIPTURE

Every sermon centered on Christ crucified: 'Leave Christ out? Better leave the pulpit out altogether.' Preached justification by faith alone, total depravity, unconditional election, particular redemption, irresistible grace, and the perseverance of the saints. Called Calvinism 'the gospel, and nothing else.' Yet his Calvinism never dampened his evangelistic zeal — it fueled it. He baptized over 15,000 converts personally.

Scripture:

1 Corinthians 2:1-2, Romans 3:21-28, Ephesians 2:1-10, 1 Corinthians 15:1-4

3

Fruit & Lifestyle

VERDICT: SERVANT-HEARTED

Founded the Stockwell Orphanage for 500+ children, 17 almshouses for widows, a ministry to abused women, and the Pastors' College — all funded from his own earnings. Despite earning the equivalent of millions, gave almost everything away and took no salary from the Tabernacle. Married to Susannah for 36 years. Suffered from gout, depression, and Bright's disease — preaching through great physical pain. His wife became an invalid at 33 and could rarely attend his services.

Scripture:

James 1:27, Matthew 25:35-40, 1 Timothy 3:2-3, 2 Corinthians 12:9-10

4

Revelation vs. Scripture

VERDICT: SCRIPTURE-FIRST

Scripture was his sole authority: 'If your creed and Scripture do not agree, cut your creed to pieces, but make it agree with this book.' Never claimed extra-biblical revelation. Withdrew from the Baptist Union when he saw ministers abandoning biblical inerrancy, substitutionary atonement, and the reality of judgment — proving his commitment to Scripture cost him everything.

Scripture:

2 Timothy 3:16-17, Psalm 19:7-11, 2 Peter 1:19-21, Jude 1:3

5

Finances & Transparency

VERDICT: BEYOND-REPROACH

Took no salary from the Metropolitan Tabernacle. Invested his sermon royalties in orphans, widows, pastoral training, and church planting. Despite worldwide fame and enormous earnings, only about $250,000 remained at his death. A model of generosity that puts modern prosperity preachers to shame.

Scripture:

Acts 20:33-35, 2 Corinthians 8:9, 1 Timothy 6:6-8, Matthew 6:19-21
